Vaccination centre opens at Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton

A hospital which pioneered the treatment of wounded First World War veterans has become the latest venue to join the list of NHS COVID-19 vaccination centres. More than a century ago, Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, Wandsworth led the world in the rehabilitation of amputees.

It will now deliver vaccinations to people eligible for a COVID-19 jab, bringing a boost to NHS efforts to protect people in Roehampton.

The new vaccination centre at Queen Mary’s opened today. Vaccinations will only be administered to those who have received their NHS vaccination invite, and the centre will operate by appointment only. People with appointments are asked not to arrive too long in advance of their booked slot to ensure that queues can be kept to a minimum.

 

The opening follows the launch last week of the vaccination centre at Battersea Arts Centre, also in Wandsworth borough.

Dr Nicola Jones, GP Borough Lead for Wandsworth, said: “This new vaccination centre is great news for Roehampton as it gives local people additional convenient access to the COVID-19 jab. The vaccination is safe, effective and the best way to protect you, your loved ones and those around you from coronavirus.

About the NHS Vaccination Programme

  • People who are eligible can get a COVID-19 jab are:
  • people aged 55 and over
  • people at high risk from coronavirus (clinically extremely vulnerable)
  • people who live or work in care homes
  • health and social care workers
  • people with a condition that puts them at higher risk (clinically vulnerable)
  • people with a learning disability
  • people who are a main carer for someone at high risk from coronavirus
  • People can use the national booking service to reserve a slot at an NHS vaccination centre or one of the pharmacy-led services across the country.
  • Wandsworth GPs are also contacting eligible patients to book an appointment direct at their sites.

  • Founded in 1915, as a military hospital specialising in the care of amputees, Queen Mary’s became a world-leading rehabilitation centre during the First World War, specialising in scientific advances in limb fitting and offering training opportunities to prepare patients for employment.
  • In the 1920s, it expanded to treat other limb patients, including children, and opened a new hospital on the current Roehampton site.
  • A specialist tropical diseases unit for WW2 prisoners of war opened in 1945.
